"I know! Let's put on a show" And Mickey and Judy did, throughout their movies of the 1930s and '40s. Now, too, have Jeff Harnar and Shauna Hicks, having developed their early cabaret show into an ever-more-delightful full evening's presentation. (If you just said "Mickey and Judy who??" you may leave the room!) Offered this June as a Town Hall one-nighter, and introduced by TV film host Robert Osborne, the show featured some 30 songs that Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney performed, separately or together, through seven films and Garland's television show. Without trying to mimic the stars, Jeff and Shauna warmly caught their styles and exuberance, as well as their deep real-life affection for each other. And what songwriters those films had: Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, Harburg, Styne, Arlen, Lane and more. Fresh arrangements by James Followell were smartly and smoothly carried out by a 30-piece orchestra under the direction of Barry Levitt. The evening will reappear as a CD.
