Russ Lorenson

Russ Lorenson and Friends
Christmas in San Francisco

The Rrazz Room
New York, NY
Christmas music covering all genres from pop to jazz to swing to ballads permeated Russ Lorenson's traditional holiday show embellished by guest performances by big-band belter Terese Genecco, the Crown Prince of cabaret Barry Lloyd and local musical actor Alexandra Kaprielien. Old chestnuts like Lorenson and Genecco's duet of "Let It Snow," Kaprielien's saucy "Santa Baby" and Lorenson's up-tempo "I'll Be Home for Christmas" were all enhanced by the artistry of pianist Kelly Park and alto saxophonist Tony Malfatti.

Some welcome Christmas choices were included: Genecco's version of Kay Starr's "The Man with the Bag," Barry Lloyd's inclusion of "Toyland" from Babes in Toyland and an ensemble rendition of "Snow" from White Christmas. If you're going to present an entire set-list of holiday music, these songs breakup the routine and add some spice to the mix. Lorenson has a smooth early Tony Bennett sound that works well on ballads like "That's What I Want for Christmas" and a lovely medley of "My Grownup Christmas List"/"Christmas Was Meant for Children."
