Susan Werner

The Auditorium
Chicago, IL
Susan Werner connected beautifully with her Chicago homies who were delighted by “Give Me Chicago Any Day” and “Stay On Your Own Side of Town” both with Chicago references. As Werner grows as a songwriter, her programs become more varied with songs ranging from folk, to her Great American Songbook stylings, and her most recent foray into gospel music which both explores and satirizes modern day religiosity.

“I Can’t Be New” has deservedly been called a standard, reflecting feelings of a long time partner willing to accede to all of her lover’s needs yet unable to compete against new faces. Ingrid Graudins performed a Werner’s benedictive “May I Suggest” with a combination of vocal excellence and interpretive simplicity that left the crowd breathless.

The challenge of preserving cabaret’s intimacy in the cavernous Auditorium Theater is satisfied by placing the audience on the stage floor and the performer on a raised platform. While there were occasional sound challenges, the arcs of amber lights behind the performer adds to the festive atmosphere.
