![]() Well, there we were sitting in the Blue Note, as close as people can get to one another, watching Steve Tyrell singing, telling jokes and stories invoking theatrical nuances. His performance included swing, cool, Latin, soul and pop, all in anticipation of his 7th album release Back to Bacharach. Steve is one of the few entertainers who performs at jazz clubs and cabarets around the country, aside from worldwide tours. He is a Grammy Award winner dubbed a ‘renaissance man’—producer, songwriter, music supervisor, performer and two-time Emmy nominee. At age 19, he journeyed from Texas to New York to work at pop and soul music giant Scepter Records having already had a career as a recording artist at age 15. He worked with great artists, forming a personal alliance with Burt Bacharach and Hal David that has lasted a lifetime. Steve’s biography is an amazing triumph from motion pictures and movie music, behind the scenes, to being discovered as the wedding singer in Father of the Bride resulting in his first album. This show is a compilation of the pop standards from his various albums, including Songs of Sinatra, featuring favorites like “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” “Witchcraft” and “Fly Me To The Moon,” which he sung at the request of the Sinatra family at the opening concert of Sinatra’s induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. Steve’s a crooner, with a little gravel on the side, possessing a smile that could melt the proverbial iceberg. Continuing with Billie Holiday songs “The Mood That I’m In,” “What A Little Moonlight Can Do” (in a funky jazz Caribbean flavor), to Bacharach/David tunes from the new album “This Guy’s In Love With You,” “Look of Love,” “One Less Bell to Answer,” “A House Is Not a Home” and “What The World Needs Now” with all proceeds from this album going to the National Colorectal Cancer Research Alliance in remembrance of Steve’s wife Stephanie. With a band that sounds like 20 pieces including Musical Director Quinn Johnson, Piano; Ed Howard, Bass; Steve Connor, Guitar; John Allen, Keyboard; and the fabulous Lou Soloff on Trumpet together with talented and delightful backup singers LaTanya Hall and Darryl Tookes, this show plays 2 performances a night thru May 25th. A must see! Sandi Durell |
