Will Van Dyke

The Grass is Always Greener
The Songs of Will Van Dyke

The Duplex
New York, NY
Playing host and playing piano (both delightfully), Will Van Dyke presented his songs, most with lyrics co-written by Josh Holloway.  Six singers, including talented Michael Hunsaker, Carrie Manolakos and Katie Gassert were thoughtfully directed by Lisa Moss at The Duplex, showcasing the promising writer’s cheerily admitted speciality: expressing angst. Thankfully, it’s angst that comes in different flavors, most appealing.  Comical Josh Lamon nailed the endearing “I Need You More,” a realization that good relationships might be more essential than good Chinese food (these lyrics co-written by Randy Blair).   Sincerity prevailed, if occasionally overstated.  Victoria Matlock’s “Come Home” was touching.  Humor bristled in the lament of a beleaguered second grader as the nuanced work of skillful Danny Schmittler made “The Very Worst Year” was one of the very best.  But in the encore when he finally sang solo, Will proved to be his own most effective interpreter, achingly vulnerable and real.
