![]() This year she looked back at Marcovicci Sings Movies II. The first time I saw Marcovicci's cabaret show was in the Oak Room over 20 years ago, when she was singing Marcovicci Sings Movies. This year she looked back at Marcovicci Sings Movies II. Much is the same; the song list has changed but most of the selections are still culled from the glory days of movies. Remaining is the Marcovicci style, the aura, the connection, the exhilaration she transmits and the melancholy. Andrea Marcovicci knows how to form a show around an audience longing for something that is lost forever. Singing a sentimental "Thanks for the Memory" wrapped around "The Way We Were," she admitted, "These songs are in my bones." Her voice was lighter back then, somewhat unsteady. It has become stronger, more secure, but still challenged. Marcovicci's allure is not vocal. Her phrasing was always quirky, often bewildering and today it remains so. Her sense of timing is questionable, but she is unequaled in unearthing the song from her soul and transplanting it into the listener. In turn, the audience cannot help but hold fast in her gaze and melt in her outstretched hands. Accompanied by the versatile piano talents of musical director Shelly Markham and Jered Egan on bass, Marcovicci's high point here is the brilliantly bitter self-hatred felt in, "The Days of Wine and Roses" paired with "Call Me Irresponsible." Seeing a Marcovicci show is always an event. People automatically dress better and prepare to enjoy a visit into the past where life seemed more gentle, glamorous, and civilized. As she points out, "These songs are a catalyst in recalling memories." Andrea Marcovicci brings Marcovicci Sings Movies II to the Algonquin Hotel's Oak Room from November 11 to December 27.
