Protomayia

Katerina's
Chicago, IL
Annually, cozy Katerina’s presents Protomayia. That word is Greek for erotic love and spring fest. It happens around May 1: most recently, the tenth celebration of the event at the club. Performers represented jazz, world music, and cabaret. Glamorous jazz diva Laury Shelly offered up lush cascades of jazz riffs. Suzanne Petri belted out “La vie en rose” with passion and heart. Elegant singer/pianist Dean Allrick offered mellow jazz standards. Professor John performed signature New Orleans favorites followed by a smokey version of “On the Sunny Side of the Street.” Professor’s delivery is Leon Redbone meets Dave Frishberg and is quite entertaining. Virtuoso guitarist Alfonso Ponticelli impressed with perfectly executed rhythms ranging from bossa to Bach. Yours truly was delighted to add adult comedy cabaret to the bill of fare. With no rehearsals whatsoever, Brian O’Hern accompanied singers from the various genres quite well. However, what gives this event its joyful energy is hostess Katerina herself. Greek-American Katerina Carson showers each singer with rose petals and gracious, personalized introductions. Whether fan or performer, there’s no need to be in Katerina’s parlor to feel like a special guest—just spend time in her club.
