Sally Kellerman

Sally

Rrazz Room
San Francisco, CA
Celebrating the release of her new self-titled CD, Sally Kellerman breezed into San Francisco for a couple of very relaxed shows at the Rrazz Room. Sally calls her show "the anti-show"— it flows freely, exudes a comfortable ease, and certainly breaks down the fourth wall between artist and audience. The haphazard structure of her show belies her musical knowledge and abilities. Kellerman has been singing for a long time, infusing her material with a passion and sentiment that comes with a respect for the music, whether it be a jazzy blues number ("Every Night Is a Blue Night"), a slowed-down standard ("Just One of Those Things"), or a sweet ballad ("The Time of Your Life"').

Backed by Grammy nominated arranger/songwriter Chris Caswell, Kellerman's show highlights her sensuous signature voice with blues and jazz-tinged rock. Mose Allison's 'Your Mind is on Vacation," Caswell's "Somebody Call the Cops" (written for Sally), and "Can't Get Your Lovin Off My Mind'"showcase Sally's playful nature. She bares her soul on the ballads, delivered in a breathy clarity that illuminates the lyric and defines their intent. "Say it Isn't So," written by five-time Grammy award-winner Mervin Warrens, shines, as does her cover of the romantic "Over Over Night." George Mesterhazy, Paula West's brilliant musical director, sat in on the opening show and added some lovely keyboard accompaniment. His melodica (also known as "blow-organ" similar to the accordion and harmonica) added a sweet 1960's Henry Mancini sound that enhanced some of the ballads.

Kellerman's laid back performance style doesn't mean she doesn't work hard at her craft. Her new CD, choice of material and first rate collaborators show a resurgent musician with a solid resume and a bright future.
