Craig Pomranz

Valentine's Day!

Metropolitan Room
New York, NY
Craig Pomranz’s Valentine’s Day show was a lesson in the art of cabaret.  His beseeching opening, “Be Careful, It’s My Heart,” showed his intent of opening up his own heart to us in song and story.  A performer of unabashed sentimentality, he was equally humorous and gently witty.

Cole Porter’s “Throwing a Ball Tonight,” interspersed with a list of celebrity invitees that did not show, had us in stitches.  Surely they were all up to their own holiday shows or they could have not refused his invitation.

Overdone in past years, “My Funny Valentine” doesn't get much attention as of late, but Craig pulled it out, dusted if off and freshly offered up a fully intact rendering, with the verse as a bonus.

In addition to the “Standard” romantic fare and the funny “Special Material”, he spiced it up a bit by including Laura Nyro’s “I Never Meant to Hurt You” and a dreamy take on Frankie Valli’s “My Eyes Adored You.”  Another surprise was the cool jazz tune, “Close Your Eyes.”

Mr. Pomranz’s high tenor voice was at once robust and lyrical, delivering some rich lower notes.  I would like to hear more of his low voice as it would add a welcome contrast to his oft-used stratospheric tenor.

More than just a fine pianist, Musical Director Steve Bocchino added to the fun by acting as the star’s foil, and added additional warmth to the proceedings with some subtle backup singing.
