KT Sullivan

Colored Lights

The Rrazz Room
San Francisco, CA
In her Rrazz Room debut, KT Sullivan served up a solid evening of tender love songs and comic material from nearly one hundred years of stage gems.
With her rich, controlled soprano, Sullivan brings out the subtlety and sophistication in songs like "Try to Remember" and "Falling in Love with Love." When she shifts down to her lower register, she owns her choice of material. Cole Porter's "Tale of the Oyster," "My Husband's First Wife," and Noel Coward's "World Weary" all receive Sullivan's trademark ability to deliver the sharp wit and humor of the lyric.

With tasteful accompaniment from accomplished jazz pianist Jon Weber and Krzsztof Pabian on bass, Sullivan's arrangements are soothing and sweet on the ballads, saucy and sometimes naughty on the playful tunes. Her medley of "Much More" from The Fantasticks and Kander and Ebb's "Colored Lights" defined the evening and illuminated KT's style and talent. Sullivan, a veteran of the musical stage, adds an actor's intelligence, a great deal of charm, and wistful nostalgia to her show. The material follows her stage career with the hit shows and the near misses included. It all works perfectly in this very satisfying, often exhilarating presentation.
