Steven Zumbo

3 Shows With Pride

Don't Tell Mama
New York, NY
Although Steven Zumbo says he’s not big on themes, he surely had one.  In celebration of Gay Pride month, Zumbo has woven together song after song relating to who he is. Off to a roaring start with musical director Gerry Dieffenbach, the first of several harmonic offerings included “Gotta Have Me Go with You.”  Zumbo has an infectious, upbeat personality and is an easy-to-listen to vocalist with a pleasant baritone.  He’s quick with what he calls his Hijinx and Tomfoolery, like “I love straight people. My parents were.”

Aside from many comic moments, Zumbo sang a soulful, introspective “Being Green” and “If Love Were All.” “No pronouns or names” says Zumbo as a lead into “The Music That Makes Me Dance.” He understands his lyrics and presents them with the attention and intention they deserve.

For some novelty and laughs, “Marty the Martian” came to earth with eleven arms that he needs so he can hug and hug and hug. . .  Replete with chicken jokes, the chuckles continued with “Don’t Tell Mama” in more fun-laden harmonies.

From Noël Coward and Gershwin to Peter Allen and Joni Mitchell, Steven Zumbo covered the gamut of love, history and politics his way. He’s a charming entertainer with a good sense of reality.  The show was directed by Helen Baldassare.
