Amanda McBroom

The Barns of Wolf Trap
Vienna, VA
A typical problem when seeing a cabaret tribute to the work of Brel is that one feels that one is watching a production of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well… where three of the cast members haven’t shown up.

Amanda McBroom’s homage to Brel at Wolf Trap presents a totally fresh approach to his songs, smartly opening with the lesser-known “You Don’t Forget the Past” and “Girl in an Armchair.” Similarly, she also presents less-familiar English translations for some of the songs, including her own translation of “Song for Old Lovers.”

McBroom’s longstanding connection to the material is apparent. She delivered a breezier-than-usual “I Loved” and her version of “Carousel” is a model of intensity. All was supported by the fluidly connected piano work of Music Director Michele Brourman.

In the show, McBroom credited Brel’s work with inspiring her to become a songwriter.  And her presentation of “If We Only Have Love” showed its direct influence on her own hit, “The Rose,” presented as a very welcome encore.
