In From Beale Street to State Street, entertainer Jimmy Damon morphs gracefully from Borscht Belt tummler, to sultry lounge singer, to country crooner, classic rocker, and back again. He also tells fine stories supported by fascinating photos; the best may be about hanging out at Sun Records in Memphis with Elvis who was first coming to light. However, in those years our Jimmy Demopolous was still in high school so, yes, he could hang out with the future King, but had to be home before dark to do his homework. Damon brings not only great chops, but a commitment to interpretive truth: He knows to let go of the volume yet retain the resonance. The moments of vulnerability in “Danny Boy” and in “The Impossible Dream” are as much appreciated as the power belt in “My Way.” Damon’s ability to engage an audience, even in a large hall with auditorium seating, is powerful…he works the room, sprinting even to the cheap seats for a handshake and a smile. He asks the audience questions…lots of ‘em…and their responses become part of the fun. There is little wonder that Damon has remained the darling of Chicago’s Gold Coast set lasting through seven mayors. Jimmy Damon, in a word….. timeless.
