Allan Harris

Just Me

Birdland
New York, NY
There are a few performers who are so relaxed and unruffled that they make me smile to know they’re so secure within their talents. Enter Allan Harris—jazz vocalist, producer, songwriter, guitarist, actor and educator. Harris took the stage in that relaxed manner and opened his mouth from which poured the swingin’ dreamy tones of “On the Street Where You Live” and the smoky soul-filled “When Will the Bells Ring For Me?”
Patter provided insight into boyhood days growing up in Brooklyn, NY and reminiscences about his mom. He’s recorded numerous CDs, won awards and kudos from many, including Tony Bennett. It’s no wonder!

Harris is like a fuller, warmer version of the great Nat King Cole, with a little mix of Billy Eckstine. He deftly executes a soft and mellow “I’ve Never Been in Love Before,” coming full circle with a dramatic and powerful “Bring Him Home” from Les Miserables. Many of his original songs referenced his wife, with love and deep caring. He presented several songs from Cross That River, his original, inspiring show about the black cowboys in the West, closing with his own patriotic and strong “I Do Believe” which could probably be the next American anthem. For lessons in less is more, Harris is a must!

His amazing band consisted of Dan Kaufman on piano, Paul Beaudry (bass), Jerome Jennings (drums) and special guest Alan Grubner, an extraordinary musician, who made his jazz violin speak volumes. Shows continue through May.
