While Nancy Marano’s CDs are delightful, she faced certain entertainment challenges performing live in Feinstein’s cozy quarters. For example, on her recordings, one hears clearly how she scats with a wonderful bounce. But at Feinstein’s, her scatting was generally drowned out by the saxophone accompaniment. In fact, vocals being drowned out by the instruments was an issue throughout the performance. That is one of several reasons why “Mirror Mirror Mirror”(music by David Raksin, lyrics by Johnny Mercer) was such a standout. Marano sang it to her own understated piano accompaniment, telling Mercer’s lyrical story with simplicity and heart. We heard every reflective note and word for a lovely connection. Marano’s voice is rich and resonant with the right lilt for both newer jazz and standards. However, in an intimate space where the audience sits a few feet from the performer, there is an argument for greater connection with the audience through energy and a certain physical openness. Ms. Marano had her connective moments, but we could have used more. The sidemen were grand on solos, most notably Steve LaSpina on bass.
