Marieann Meringolo

In the Spirit

Iridium
New York, NY
The Christmas holidays got off to a merry musical start with Marieann Meringolo’s spirited variety show In the Spirit presented at the Iridium. Every seat was filled in expectation of a lively evening of vocals and instrumentals—and the show didn’t disappoint as Marieann and her guests sprinkled familiar pop and traditional numbers with fresh, modern touches that nevertheless retained the spirit and sweetness of the season.

Setting the tone, Marieann began with a jazz-tinged interpretation of “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” followed soon by a slow, sultry “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!” and a playful duet with Musical Director Doyle Newmyer on “Baby, It’s Cold Outside.” More traditional numbers included a driving, clarion-like take on “Do You See Hear What I Hear?,” a rolling, rhythmic “Mary, Did You Know?” and, in recognition of Chanukah, “A Mazel-toe Christmas.”  Special guest and Tony Award winner Chuck Cooper scored with a hip, rousing “Silent Night” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” while, for added dimension, Marieann was joined by members of her vocal ensemble, Spiritus, to perform Karen Benedetto’s pop gospel, “One.” Backing the music, with Doyle, were ace pros Boots Maleson on bass and Brian Woodruff on drums.

The entire club, including a staff that gracefully served the dense crowd, shared the warm-hearted celebratory mood. A portion of each cover was contributed to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
