Megon McDonough

Her Way

The Space
Evanston, IL
For decades, Megon McDonough has been a popular folk and musical theater performer; today, in Her Way she pokes fun at herself as a “mere folksinger.” McDonough, however, brought to The Space (a cozy venue offering excellent sound and capacity for a medium-sized crowd) qualities that translate into cabaret’s best. She offers a mellifluous, consistently and technically fine vocal instrument without making the evening about that. More importantly, she is a grand storyteller: her fun, yet loving impersonations of favorites Diana Ross, Doris Day and Judy are hilarious. Simply delivered, “Danny Boy”’s sad journey reaches hearts. “Beatle Love,” by McDonough herself, is a remarkable story about how the Beatles’ unforgettable debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show inspired Megon to find her own musical wings. This song combines wistfulness with gentle wit. It resonates with anyone who found inspiration in one particular moment in time. Her closing number, “Amazing Things,“ co-written with Jana Stanfield, is based on Miguel Ruiz’s popular book, The Four Agreements, uses an uplifting melody to remind us to live in the present and believe in our dreams. Pianist Peter Polzak provided just the right support. With due respect, Folkies, Cabaret is glomming onto your gal.
