Everything Is Alright—
A Tribute to Stevie Wonder

Davenport's
Chicago, IL
From the get-go, hostess Alma Mendoza explains that the evening’s entertainment won’t entail a lot of dialogue but, instead, will be a celebration of the music of Stevie Wonder.  In the hands of its exuberant cast it is a celebration, indeed. Standouts include Mendoza’s own opening medley combining  “Uptight (Everything is Alright), “For Once in My Life” and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.” Mendoza continues to grow as a performer, adding genuine audience connection to her rich alto instrument.

Standout performaners include Mark Fernandez with a new-found control and focus singing “Until You Come Back to Me” and especially “You and I.” Amy Cole delivers a thoughtfully interpreted and well-sung “Lately.” The real standout of this show that was chock full of talent and heart was Diego Colon. He brings all the elements: a grand seamless voice; intense physical energy (that he is a big guy with a noteworthy tall “Fro” gives a commanding presence visually); the ability to communicate the lyric while maintaining the pop/rock feel; and most of all, that most difficult of qualities to describe with mere words—the ability to spread intense joy through music. Young though he may be, Colon delivers with an infectious confidence that never crosses the line into arrogance. Keep your eyes on this dynamic performer—he is going places!
