It’s challenging to point out the highlights in a boffo (albeit long at twenty-six numbers and over 2 ½ hours) evening of Sondheim showstoppers presented as a fundraiser for Porchlight Theatre Company. Jess Godwin’s country-ballad take on “Losing My Mind” demonstrated how it’s not just Sondheim’s intellectual bite, but his use of the prosaic that connects. Jeff Parker chose well in presenting “Sorry/Grateful” with truthful simplicity. Johanna McKenzie Miller’s child-like interpretation of “Anyone Can Whistle” brought a lovely layer of discovery to the song. Ross Lehman again demonstrated his remarkable ability as a communicator both in song and conversation with this enthusiastic audience. Rebecca Finnegan and Michael Lindner paired delectably in “A Little Priest.” (Go ahead, enjoy my slice of pie.) Peggy Roeder beautifully delivered stubborn pride in “I’m Still Here,” then regretful wistfulness in “Good Thing Going.” Bethany Thomas was grand, both sassing her way through “That Dirty Old Man” and then later belting her way through “Being Alive.” Sean Blake proved that a guy can also be a “Broadway Baby” in a funny, multi-layered rendition of the song. Kudos are also due to Doug Peck’s impeccable musical direction and Rob Lindley’s witty hostmanship. The newly renovated Mayne Stage is an excellent cabaret venue. It’s roundish shape and wood trim create warmth and intimacy in a medium-capacity room. Visiting artists and fans should definitely check it out.
