Karine Hannah

Metropolitan Room
New York, NY
Born in Montreal, Canada, and having started singing at age four, this diminutive combination of Barbra, Cher and fellow Canadian, Celine, thankfully, has “chops” that can hold up to the comparisons. With strong support from two exceptional back-up singers, Greg Clark and John James, and the marvelous Clifford Carter at the piano, she proceeded to knock song after pop/rock song “out of the park”!

Hannah arrived in New York in 1998 with some very heavy-duty credentials, having been hand-picked by Celine Dion to perform at her wedding with the David Foster Orchestra. Since coming to the states, she’s worked with multi-Grammy Award-winning songwriters Jim Steinman, Diane Warren and Rick Allison, and she’s recorded with Turkish pop superstar Sezen Aksu, along with releasing two CDs of her own, I’ll Be Alright (Breaking Records) and “Karine” (Young Pals Music).

Capable of singing in a variety of different genres and languages, her set at the Metropolitan drew heavily from the 1980s with classics like “These Eyes” coupled with “I’d Really Like to See You Tonight,” “Sometimes When We Touch,” an a capella verse and chorus of “When I Need You” and a deeply felt “The Living Years,” recorded by Mike and The Mechanics, with touching lyrics by B.A. Robertson about lost communication between parent and child.

She sang two exceptional medleys, one of which included “Turn Me Loose” (originally recorded by Canadian rock band, Loverboy), “The Air That I Breathe,” “Just Remember I Love You,” “Love Is the Answer,” “How Much I Feel” and “Just When I Needed You Most.” Each song flowed seamlessly from one to another and revealed her very palpable connection to the golden age of pop and rock music.

A humorous story about making out with Bruce Springsteen and a spot on impersonation of Dr. Ruth enhanced her comfortable stage presence and easy rapport with the audience and left the impression that there was far more to her than just a powerhouse voice. She’s someone to watch!
