Whether it is concept or execution that makes Beckie Menzie and Tom Michael’s Isn’t It Iconic? Celebration of Musical Icons a superb cabaret offering is moot. The concept enables a program of refreshing variety. Decade-spanning icons range from Sinatra to Aretha to Elvis. The execution inspires both laughter and reflection. On the reflective side, Menzie’s quiet, slower interpretation of Dolly Parton’s ”Nine to Five” helps us savor feelings that resonate with anyone who works: We all need that “cup of ambition.” Michael soars vocally without stooping to impersonate Tony Bennett on “Rags to Riches.” The duo smartasses fine in broad comedy with “Madonna Menzie,” dancing in the goofball pointy bra alongside Michael in wig and tutu. They know better than to milk the bit; brevity makes it funnier. Then, moments later, they caress our hearts pairing “In Between” and “Have You Seen My Childhood” in the context of the emotional impact of early stardom on both Michael Jackson and Judy Garland. This show’s version of the duo’s signature marathon medley is better than prior iterations because it is less dense: we have time to savor the words of Peggy Lee’s hit “Fever” morphing into Justin Bieber or the notion of Celine Dion’s overindulgent volume. Delivered with tenderness and sweet harmonies, “People” is the right eleven o’clock number, reflecting not only the connection between lovers, but also the intense connection between performers and audience.
