Corky Hale...and Friends

Corky Hale (pictured) kidded several times during the evening about the hours of rehearsal she and her four Friends had undertaken in preparation for the show. In fact, these pros got along quite well, thank you, with the little or no rehearsal time they had. They created a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere where tasty (often created on the spot) arrangements showcased the varied voices as they performed a selection of Great American Songbook material.

Corky, who is one of those pianists who can instantly play just about any song in any key, opened the evening singing a swinging version of “Nice ’n Easy.” Moving to the harp, she accompanied Brenna Whitaker’s slow, touching and masterful take on “If I Should Lose You.” Tricia Tahara, whom Corky proudly introduced as her daughter-in-law, delivered an ethereal “My Romance,” displaying an incredible vocal range. Keeping it in the family, Sally Kellerman had fun with “Love Potion No. 9,” written by Corky’s husband, Mike Stoller, and his partner and Jerry Leiber. Closing out the first round of the Friends was Ariana Savalas. She delivered a dreamy, magical version of “I See Your Face Before Me.”

Each of the singers returned for a couple of additional songs and, when Corky wasn’t at the piano, Jeff Lass took over and Jim DeJulio added support on the bass. Corky and all of her beautiful Friends delivered a classy evening of timeless songs sung with sensitivity and style. These Friends should get together more often.

Corky Hale will be at NYC's Knickerbocker Bar & Grill 4/21 and at St. Peter's 4/27.
