Rachelle Ferrell

Yoshi's Jazz Club
San Francisco, CA
Opening with an epic version of “Satisfied’ from her 2000 CD, Individuality, soul, R&B and jazz wizard Rachelle Ferrell nearly exhausted the audience with her remarkable vocal virtuosity. A voice that flies across five octaves, modulates volume with impeccable timing and superior breath control combined with soulful emotion and energy, is a joy to behold. The modern, hip hop scat Ferrell incorporated into the song was worth the price of admission alone. Very few singers can match her dazzling vocal pyrotechnics and, when she’s on fire, just watch and admire.

Ferrell is a very modern jazz artist with a deep connection to her soul roots. “Sister,” her ode to female empowerment, seemed to touch a lot of women in the house. She’s a lot more than just the voice. She’s also an accomplished songwriter and musician. Taking to the piano, she offered the redemptive “I Forgive You” and “I Can Explain,” songs that speak to the heart. A stretched out “My Funny Valentine,” followed by a medley of “Autumn Leaves” and “Summertime,” were the closest Ferrell came to mainstream jazz.

Backed by sensational jazz artists, Ferrell seems to have no separation between thought/emotion and vocals. There’s a fluidity from mind to heart to her elastic mouth that emits sounds rarely heard. She uses her voice as a fifth instrument, expanding the music with dynamic range and dexterity. Ferrell may wow her fans and newcomers with the vocal techniques, but she uplifts them with her messages and sage-like wisdoms.
